Strong Effort for Spartans Against Herkimer

A strong showing at home against Herkimer College wasn't quite enough for Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball to come away with a win on Saturday.

The Spartans put together their most consistent performance of the season, but came up short against the Generals by a 59-48 final. Cayuga's 48 points mark their highest total of the season, as was the 10 three-pointers they made on Saturday.

Coach Jim Alberici is hoping the Spartans can gain some confidence after playing well and shooting well against one of the stronger teams in Region III.

"We played really well today. I was really proud of our effort," said Alberici. "We shot well from the outside, and we gave ourselves a chance to win against a good team in Herkimer. Hopefully we can gain some confidence from how we played today and carry that forward this season."

Cayuga trailed early in the first quarter, but a three-pointer by Haley Mosch, an and-one by Xavia Evener and better foul shooting landed the Spartans down only four after the quarter. Another three-pointer by Mosch tied the game late in the second quarter, but the Generals scored six straight points and led 30-24 at the break.

Herkimer built a 10-point lead early in the third quarter, but the Spartans hit three straight three-pointers, including two more by Mosch, to cut the lead to 34-33. Herkimer closed the third on a 12-2 run, though, and led by 11 going into the fourth. Cayuga responded with a 10-2 run midway through the fourth quarter to cut the Generals' lead to eight, but Herkimer pulled away in the final minutes for the win.

Mosch had 22 points, including six three pointers, and added 11 rebounds and four assists. Lexi Alberici had nine points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists, and Evener had 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Spartans are home again on Sunday to host Mohawk Valley Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
