The Spartans celebrate after defeating Herkimer College 1-0 in the regional semifinal.
Cayuga Community College Men's Soccer used a second-half goal and an airtight defense to shut out Herkimer College in a regional semifinal victory Tuesday at Falcon Park.

The Spartans advanced to the regional final for the second consecutive year, this time after earning a tense 1-0 win over the Generals. They'll face defending national champion Mohawk Valley Community College on Saturday, Nov. 1, at host site Genesee Community College in the regional final.

Cayuga and Herkimer battled through a scoreless first half, with the teams trading scoring chances and defensive stands. In the 53rd minute, Cayuga's Zander Wishart scored off a pass by Matthew Twigg, giving the Spartans the lone goal of the match.

Cayuga's defense, led by Matthew Manton, Owen Steedman and keeper Matthew Chitty, held the Generals at bay for the final 37 minutes of play to ensure the shutout win. Chitty had three saves, Maxwell Bedford had four shots on goal and Twitty had two shots on goal for the Spartans.

The Spartans (10-1, ranked 3rd nationally) advance to the NJCAA North B District finals to play Mohawk Valley (11-1-1, ranked 4th nationally), who Cayuga defeated 2-0 earlier this season. The Hawks defeated Cayuga 2-1 in last year's regional final and reached this year's final with a 4-1 win over Jamestown Community College on Tuesday.

Cayuga and Mohawk Valley will kick off Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Genesee Community College. The winner advances to the national championship, which starts Nov. 11 in Herkimer.
