Spartans Lose to Hawks
Cayuga Community College Men's Basketball rallied to challenge #1 Mohawk Valley Community College in the second half before falling on the road to the Hawks on Sunday.
The Spartans trailed by double digits at halftime but slashed the lead to four with more than 10 minutes to play before losing 95-83 to the top-ranked team in NJCAA Division III. Cayuga is now 2-3 on the season and 2-2 in Region III play.
The Spartans stayed with the Hawks in the opening minutes of the first half, with Mohawk Valley holding just a 17-14 lead with 11 minutes remaining before halftime. The Hawks ended the half on a 33-19 run, though, and led 50-33 at the break.
Cayuga cut into the Hawks' lead early in the second half, with an and-one by Josiah Murphy making it 58-50. A Jai Clayton steal and assist to Yagub Drammeh made it a six-point game, and another Drammeh layup made it 60-56. The Spartans couldn't pull closer, though, with the Hawks responding with back-to-back three-pointers and leading the rest of the way.
Drammeh had a stellar game for Cayuga, finishing with 25 points and 22 rebounds. Jadeir Breedlove also had 25 points, adding four assists and three rebounds, and Kirk McFarlane had 10 points and seven rebounds. Murphy had 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Cayuga is on the road again Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Jefferson Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
